Ringing out the old year with plastic surgery

Oh, those end-of-the-year lists: most glamorous and fattening, biggest lies and disappointments, stupidest fads and TV shows, worst dresses and investments−−and, of late, most sustainable foods, eco-friendly chocolate, reusable plastic bags and environmentally-friendly children. If you’re like most people, you put cooking, gift wrapping, cleaning and other holiday chores on the back burner while you have another cookie and pour over the lists of the latest, greatest and most disastrous of the year.

Oprah.com is very interested in plastic surgery statistics in the United States. This is no idle curiosity. Plastic surgery trends are a mirror of our society or the statistics “that keep on giving.” They reveal the look the American people invested in last year, the demographic that did the investing and what they’re planning to invest in next year − nothing less than the wheels that drive a significant part of our economy.

When Oprah.com contacted the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery to get their most recent statistics, here is what they found most interesting:

• There were 318,123 breast implant surgeries performed in 2010.
• Of those 318,123 breast implant surgeries, 2,414 were performed on patients 65 and older.
• Of the 318,123 breast implant surgeries, 4,153 were performed in patients 18 and younger.
• According to a recent FDA report, 20 percent of patients with breast implants will need them removed within ten years because of rupture, hardening of the tissue around the implant and other complications.
• There were 133,511 nose jobs performed in 2010.
• Thirty-three percent of patients desiring nose jobs have moderate to severe symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (distorted body images), according to a recent study in the journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
• There were 84,685 cosmetic surgical procedures performed on patients 65 and older in 2010, including 26,635 facelifts and 24, 783 cosmetic eyelid operations.
• Ninety-one percent of cosmetic surgical procedures were performed in women in 2010.
• In 2010, Americans spent $10,677,415,674 on cosmetic procedures.

The demand for plastic surgery procedures increased almost 9% in 2010 in what was (and still is) a recession economy, illustrating several important trends. Similar to dying your gray hair, plastic surgery is more and more considered simple maintenance work. Further, you may find yourself considering plastic surgery as a necessity to keep your competitive edge in the workplace.

Generation X tops baby boomers in cosmetic procedures

First, who is Generation X? They are adults between the ages of 31 and 45. This is the age of becoming something, otherwise known as living in a pressure cooker. The race is on: get a great job, get married, have babies, buy a house and start saving for retirement. The added caveat is that now you have to do it in a recession economy.

So when this “put upon” generation has a couple of extra dollars, what are they doing with it? According to Fox Business.com, November 21, 2011, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reported that “adults between the ages of 31 and 45 accounted for 43% of all cosmetic procedures in 2010. Baby boomers, aged 51 to 64, who do in fact have more expendable income, accounted for just 28% of such procedures.

Information about these new nonsurgical, noninvasive procedures is available almost every step you take: TV commercials, magazine ads, billboards, you name it. Further, new technologies are sprouting up like squash in August. But something much subtler is at work. A prominent plastic surgeon says these procedures “…are more of a lifestyle decision these days, beyond exercise and nutrition.” In other words, procedures like Botox and filler injections have become so prevalent, they are like taking vitamins or coloring gray hair. They are what people are doing to maintain themselves. Another plastic surgeon describes this phenomenon: “Many of my patients consider these procedures as part of their budget for personal ‘maintenance.”

The scourge of Generation X is the challenge of maintaining a viable status in the workplace. Expert analysis indicates, “each age group’s level of participation in the workforce plays a role in the amount of cosmetic procedures per age group.” If you pull up stakes and invest in a recreational vehicle with plans of traveling cross country and trout fishing, you will be less likely to undergo these procedures. But nowadays, who can afford that?

The president-elect, Dr. Leo R. McCafferty of ASAPS has some words of wisdom: “I think Generation X could be a bit more thorough as they do research. Not everyone is a good candidate for these kinds of procedures, non-invasive or otherwise.” And please check the American Board of Plastic Surgery to make sure that your doctor has the proper credentials beforehand.

Realtor raffles off Botox to attract clients

There's no denying the fact that the real estate business can be a tough one, especially during these difficult economic times. A realtor from Southern California is trying to set his listing apart from the rest by raffling off $300 worth of Botox injections at an open house.

The Orange County Register reports that realtor Michael Gardner got the idea for the give-away from the swag suites at the Hollywood awards shows.

"They may not admit it, but both sexes will want to win that Botox!'' the newspaper reports Gardner wrote in his blog. "Agents may come for the swag, but they'll remember the house too."

In addition to the Botox raffle, other perks visitors to the nearly $8.5 million dollar Beverly Hills home can expect poolside Thai massages, gourmet food and test drives of the new Audi A8.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 2.4 million people had Botox injections in 2010, making it the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure.

ASAPS reports that the average price for a Botox injection treatment in the U.S. is $398 and injections need to be repeated every three to six months for best results. Winners of raffles and contests that give out cosmetic surgery or injectables as prizes should make sure the doctors are board-certified in their specialties and work out of accredited facilities. What might seem like a good deal could end up being a costly ordeal.
