Testosterone May Delay Boys’ Speech Development

Boys tend to talk later than girls; they also acquire language skills at a slower rate than girls. Now new research may point to a reason why. In a newly published study, umbilical cord blood was collected from nearly 900 Australian newborns and tested for testosterone. Newborn boys are exposed to 10 times the levels of testosterone before birth compared to girls. Sex hormones, like testosterone, are known to a play key role in shaping how the brain develops. Winter is ideal for laser procedures

The popularity of laser skin resurfacing is on the rise, and doctors say that winter is a great time to undergo these procedures.

"It's very important to avoid the sun as much as possible and it's a lot easier to do that in the winter time than it is in the middle of the summer," a Texas-based plastic surgeon recently told KTSM-TV News.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of laser skin resurfacing procedures performed by its members increased by nearly 10 percent between 2009 and 2010.

The procedure uses light to repair wrinkles, sun damage and scarring.

"Doing this type of fractional resurfacing improves skin texture, skin color, pore size, acne scarring, any kind of scarring issues that we may have," the physician told the news provider.

While a licensed, board-certified plastic surgeon can discuss what type of skin resurfacing is best for you, it's important to note that results often take as long as several months to completely appear. However, the procedure does provide long-lasting results.

ASAPS reports that the average cost for a laser skin resurfacing treatment in 2010 was $2,232.

18 And Under Perri Klass, M.D.: Seeing Social Media as Adolescent Portal More Than Pitfall

Baby boomers looking for love online may turn to plastic surgery

An increasing number of baby boomers are looking for love online, and may want to make some cosmetic enhancements in order to find their perfect match.

A survey by OurTime.com, a dating site that targets baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964), found unmarried people over 50 consider companionship more important now than they did during their 20s.

CNN reports that an eHarmony.com survey conducted in 2010 found that internet dating sites are the most popular way members of this generation are finding companions.
The Associated Press reports that those over 50 are the fastest growing segment of eHarmony's users.

Individuals who embrace the internet as a way to meet people should take the advice of experts when it comes to finding love online.

Posting a recent picture is recommended, rather than posting one that was taken 20 years ago. Otherwise, dates may feel that you are dishonest.

"Young people tend to go for looks, period," University of Washington sociology professor Pepper Schwartz told the newspaper. "Older people often have a little bit more leeway on what somebody looks like, but then they have all these other kinds of requirements that may or may not be realistic."
Those considering re-entering the dating scene in their 50s or 60s may also consider undergoing some cosmetic enhancements to improve their appearance beforehand.

According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), in 2010, common surgical procedures for those over the age of 50 included facelifts, cosmetic eyelid surgery and liposuction. Non-surgical procedures such as Botox injections, hyaluronic acid injections and laser skin resurfacing were among the popular non-surgical procedures performed on those in this age group.

Acceptance of those who undergo plastic surgeries is increasing as well, according to ASAPS. A recent survey found that 53 percent of women and 49 percent of men say they approve of plastic surgery. In addition, 67 percent of Americans said they would not be embarrassed if their friends and family knew they had cosmetic surgery.

"Taking care of yourself and paying attention to physical appearance is increasingly important to everyone," ASAPS past President Dr. Felmont F. Eaves III said. "As both traditional surgical procedures have been improved and refined, and new nonsurgical options have become available, aesthetic plastic surgeons have more to offer to our patients."

Plastic surgery trends for 2012

With a new year right around the corner, many are thinking about which plastic surgery procedures will be popular.

According to Denise Mann, editorial director for several plastic surgery information websites, consumers may see a lot of deals for injectables such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin.

The recent introduction of Xeomin, which is available under the brand name Bocouture and is derived from the same ingredient in Botox and Dysport, botulinum toxin type A, means that plastic surgeons and cosmetic dermatologists have yet another option to offer their patients who want to treat wrinkles.

"Expect to see rebates, price drops and Groupons galore as companies and surgeons vie for your business," Mann says.

The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reports that botulinum toxin type A injections were the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure in 2010, with more than 2.4 million people undergoing the treatment.

The topical use of Botox may also be another trend for the upcoming year. Studies are underway to determine whether or not the drug is effective for cosmetic use when applied topically. HealthDay reports preliminary studies are positive with the substance effectively reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will have to give the final okay for the drug to be used topically before it is available to consumers.

Some say that more men may turn to plastic surgery to enhance their appearance in the upcoming year as well.

In 2010, ASAPS reports that more than 750,000 men underwent surgical and non-surgical procedures, accounting for 8 percent of the total. However, many doctors say they've seen a bigger increase in the number of men seeking their services.

In the past, men have commonly undergone surgical procedures including liposuction, rhinoplasty, cosmetic eyelid surgery and facelifts. Botox (sometimes referred to as Bro-tox when it's done on a man), laser hair removal and hyaluronic acid injections are popular non-surgical procedures many men have undergone.

"Men like getting work done," a Florida-based plastic surgeon recently told WTSP-TV News.

Industry experts say that several recent, highly-publicized reports of botched plastic surgeries at the hands of inexperienced and unlicensed individuals may also prompt consumers to be vigilant about researching their plastic surgeons in the upcoming year.

"How many more horror stories do we need to hear about plastic surgeries gone wrong before realizing that these procedures should be left to the pros?" Mann asks.

Individuals interested in enhancing their appearance through surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedures should contact a licensed, board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure they reach their desired outcome as well as maintain safety.
