Neck lift may be effective in the anti-aging fight

Many plastic surgeons say that there are three areas that can instantly age a person - their eyes, lips and neck. And while many people focus on facial features when it comes to deciding which surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedures to consider, some experts say focusing on the neck is crucial.

"The front of the neck is one of the primary features we use to guess a person’s age," said a Texas-based plastic surgeon. "It often catches our eye first. Sagging neck skin is the telltale sign of true aging, so restoration of the neck is an important part of facial rejuvenation or facial plastic surgery."

Banding, wrinkling and fullness of the neck are among the things that make one's neck appear old. Experts say that each case must be considered independently to determine which method can result in a younger-looking neck area.

"The key is to identify the underlying problem," explains the expert. "Is it wrinkles, or is it only deep lines that bother the patient? Maybe it's just sagging skin, but not wrinkles. Perhaps the problem is both the skin and fat. Or, it could be all three: skin, fat and muscle."

Deep lines in the neck can be treated with Botox, excess fat in the neck can be removed with liposuction and loose skin can be tightened using radiofrequency or pulsed light skin tightening. In more severe cases, all three procedures may be utilized or a plastic surgeon will focus on improving the neck area during facelift surgery.

"If you properly correct the sagging neck in facial rejuvenation such as a face lift, that is the key to a youthful face and a happy patient," said the Texas-based surgeon.

Plastic surgery on the rise in China

Plastic surgeries are becoming more common in Asian countries such as China and India, according to a recent survey conducted by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).

ModernMedicine.com reports that China and India follow the United States and Brazil for the number of plastic surgeries performed in 2010.

"There are rapidly growing middle classes in China and India, and their disposable incomes are growing," the ISAPS president said. "Plastic surgery is very popular in China, just as it is in Western Europe and the United States. The media are interested in it. There is always something in the press."

According to Reuters, many Chinese women are undergoing cosmetic plastic surgeries to improve their looks.

"Parents want their daughters to be beautiful so they'll have an easier time finding a job or a husband," Beijing-based plastic surgeon Ding Xiaobang told the news source. "They'll often bring the child to get surgery the summer before college or even high school."

The news provider reports that a study conducted by the China Medical Treatment Orthopedics and Beauty Association last summer found that as many as 80 percent of plastic surgery patients in Beijing were students.

Unlike in the U.S., where breast augmentation and liposuction are the most popular procedures, Chinese patients often opt for eyelid surgeries and nose jobs. Many want their eyes to appear more "Western," so they have what's commonly referred to as double eyelid surgery to insert an extra crease into the eyelid to make the eyes appear larger.

BusinessBecause.com reports that nose-lift surgeries, in which a bridge is inserted in the nose using part of a rib, is also common, especially because the economy continues to struggle.

"Many white-collar workers have lost their jobs because of the recession, so they are now facing enormous pressure to get back to work again," a Shanghai-based plastic surgeon told the website. "Beauty - for women particularly - plays such a big part in young university graduates' job-hunting process."

On the home front, many American job-seekers to undergo cosmetic plastic surgeries as well. Procedures that help older workers appear younger and more alert, such as eyelid surgery, Botox injections and hyaluronic acid injections are all common procedures in the United States.
